Understanding the Causes of Lower Back Pain
Statistically, 80% of all Australians suffer from back pain at some time in their lives. With such a high incidence among the population, understanding the causes of lower back pain can lead you to making the best choice of care and management of your spine.

Chiropractic is often the best avenue of treatment for most low back pain as it specifically targets improvements in spinal (back) biomechanics and aims to restore proper motion and posture. This will then allow the injured vertebral discs to operate with the least amount of stress and potential for re-injury, and provide the best environment for healing.

Problems
There are two main causes

  • Lumbar spine subluxation
  • Pelvic misalignments

1. Lumbar spine subluxations are often called a pinched nerve even though that is a very simple description for a complex problem.

  • Pain can be sharp shooting pain or constant ache.
  • Sitting or after sitting, in and out of a car
  • Change of position eg standing from sitting
  • Pain first thing in the morning
  • Pain bending forward
  • Lifting.

Bad cases may have

  • Pain shooting, or referring down your leg which is commonly known as Sciatica. This may also present as pins and needles, numbness and leg weakness.
  • Debilitating pain making you stand crooked or bent over, or not be able to stand.
  • Pain when you cough or sneeze
  • Very severe pain on movement.

2. Pelvic Misalignments 0ften present with people saying that their hip is “out”

  • This situation may be there for a long time without the patient knowing.
  • Can give generalised low back ache
  • the more you walk can make it worse
  • Short walks can give relief
  • It aches when you lie in bed, it can wake you up in the night aching.
  • The pain refers to the hip, buttock or groin.

Bad cases may have

  • Pain referring down the thigh and knee
  • Walking up and down stairs can give knee pain
  • It may feel like you have only hurt your knee, usually without trauma, and not be aware of any other pain anywhere else.
  • The pain may refer to the groin or testes
  • You may not be able to weight bear or walk properly.
  • It may catch as you walk and make you limp
  • Lack of seep
What Causes Low Back Pain and Sciatica?
Lumbar pain

  • Lifting heavy items, moving furniture
  • Repetitive lifting
  • Twisting and bending
  • Holding awkward positions
  • High heels
  • Fall or trauma

Lumbar misalignments cause inflammation to the disc, causing irritation of neighbouring spinal nerves which then causes local pain or in worse cases referred pain into the leg, sciatica, pins and needles, numbness or burning sensation.

Pelvic pain

  • Twisting and lifting eg suitcases onto the bed or putting shopping into the car
  • Repetitive twisting eg reaching into the backseat of the car, unpacking things
  • Standing or walking on uneven surfaces for periods of time
  • High heels

Pelvic misalignments cause inflammation in the sacro-iliac joint causing irritation to local nerves giving local ache or pain referral.

Pelvic misalignments can give hip, knee or ankle pain with unknown cause.

What Happens If You Don't Treat It?
When abnormal joint movement of the spine and pelvis is left untreated there are wider consequences for the body due to the nerve irritation.

  • Symptoms can become more painful.
  • The pain may begin to refer
  • You may begin to get pins and needles or numbness down the leg or in the feet.
  • It may impact activities of your daily life.
  • It may interfere with your sleeping and quality of sleep.
  • It will cause uneven stress on your lumbar discs that leads to more serious conditions of the disc i.e. disc prolapse, “disc bulge”
  • The longer a condition is left untreated the more complicated it can become and be more difficult and take more time to correct. This can lead to a strain on time and finances.
How Can Eastern Suburbs Chiropractic Help?
At Eastern Suburbs Chiropractic, we will take a comprehensive history to determine where to look for your problem.

We will then do a thorough examination to specifically locate the exact spinal or pelvic joint that’s causing that problem. Then, with the use of full spine x-rays, determine why you have developed it and work out the best way of correction.

Once we have determined what the cause of your problem is, we will correct it by using a very specific and comfortable hands on adjustment which is aimed at restoring function of the spine. This adjustment also stimulates brain and central nervous system function, which helps lead to better control of the spine and body.

Dr. Heidi Haavik, a Chiropractor and neuroscientist has found through her research that Chiropractic care, adjusting the spine to restore spinal function, actually changes the way the brain functions
– Correcting the cause will reduce the time it takes for your body to optimally heal itself.
